PAT Testing

PAT Testing is an important process and without up to date PAT Tests your insurance could be invalid. The frequency of PAT tests are recommendations based on the type of equipment and range from 3 to 48 months depending on its operating environment. In the general environment of a hotel or holiday let, a yearly PAT test is recommended.

What is PAT Testing?

PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is the process of testing portable or electrical appliances that are used in the work place.  It’s checking electrical appliances (computers, power tools, kitchen equipment, etc.) to make sure they are safe.

Our PAT Testing will give you peace of mind by identifying electrical faults and offering advice to make sure your business avoids dangerous accidents.

The Electricity at Work Regulations are in place to prevent death or personal injury caused by electrics in the workplace. Business owners without a record of safety measures will be liable in the event of an accident and may fail to claim insurance without proof of safe practices.

A record of testing will help with any insurance claims and allow you to avoid nasty fines, so make sure you’re covered with Island Wide Pat Testing.

What needs to be PAT tested?

Portable appliances that need testing include any appliance that uses a flexible cable or plug and socket. This means that if there is an appliance that has a plug that is connected to a wall socket or generator, it should be PAT tested.

Equipment that should be tested include items such as electric drills, PCs, monitors, printers, kettles and larger pieces of equipment such as photocopiers and vending machines. Any cordless power tool would not need to be PAT tested. However, its associated battery charger that plugs into the wall would need to be tested.

Is PAT Testing a legal obligation?

PAT testing is not, in itself, a legal obligation.

However, current UK legislation states that businesses must maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition.

They also have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of employees and the public.

Because PAT testing is one of the most effective ways to do this, particularly for high risk or large, complex environments, it has become a standard way of meeting this legal obligation.
